On February 21, 1885, President Chester A. Arthur dedicated the Washington Monument. Also on February 21, the first working steam locomotive made its maiden run (1804), the first telephone directory was published (1880), World War I’s Battle of Verdun began (1916), NASCAR was founded (1948), and Nixon went to China (1972).
