September 29th in Comics

Charles Addams

Cartoonist Charles Addams (January 7, 1912 – September 29, 1988) was known for his macabre characters, most notably the Addams Family, who spawned four television series (two live, two animated), three movies, and a Broadway musical.

Stan Berenstain

Writer and illustrator Stan Berenstain (September 29, 1923 – November 26, 2005), along with his wife Jan, created the highly popular but saccharine children’s book series the Berenstain Bears. The bears starred in over 300 titles in their long career, and were the subject of two TV series and numerous licenses.

Their first bear story was bought by Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) for Random House. Seuss reputedly spent two years challenging the Berenstains to improve their writing, structure, and characterization before allowing the book to go to press.
